The London Loop enters the common by the sign, with one of the ancient oaks that are a feature of the common just beyond. The City of London own a number of these commons, acquired in the late 19th century when The Corporation feared that urban development was expanding so fast that there would soon be no open space within easy reach of most Londoners. http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/city-commons/west-wickham-common/Pages/default.aspx
