The church as a body of worshippers dates its origins to the late 1940s, when a group of believers met in Shirley in a Second World War Nissen Hut. They were known as The Evangelical Free Church. The hut was regarded as a temporary structure. The present-day church building seen here used to be the Sunday School of a separate congregation known as Emmanuel Church, who, faced with dwindling congregations, handed over the building in the 1950s.
