Located next to St Laurence church and opposite the old Town Hall is The Shambles. The name 'Shambles' actually refers to a slaughterhouse, and the butchers used to sell their wares from tables that dropped down from the walls. A market is still held here three times a week. As an historical aside, John Wesley preached here on 26th June 1742.
