This "new" pub has been closed for years and stands on Middleton Old Road. Last year I noticed a plaque on it (see other photo) which claims "Dick Turpin the Highwayman slept here." This seemed unlikely so I turned to Mr. Google. Whilst clicking around I found a local history blog where someone says that this plaque was placed there as a joke by a local car dealer in the late 80s or early 90s. Apparently, when the landlord of the pub was on holiday his mate Richard Turpin would look after it for him!
