If there is one thing inside any youth hostel that sums up the movement it could be this - the 'Help yourself shelf'. Items stored here by departing hostellers are utilised by new arrivals - you might well find a welcome additional ingredient for your veggie curry or stew, a condiment or whatever. Perishable food items can also be labelled 'help yourself' and stored in the fridge or freezer. If you benefit in this way you may opt to 'pass it forward' and leave an item or two (that you might otherwise take home) for the next visitor. OK you probably aren't going to find an M&S ready meal, a bottle of vintage Chablis or some green oysters from the Gironde but you never know. After all it's the little things that make a big difference.
