Located in the narrow mediaeval Martin's Lane - once also known as Fyshe Street or Luxury Lane, it apparently was used by stagecoaches going to the cathedral nevertheless. The inn itself is not as old as it might wish to appear but it is certainly centuries old. In the Civil War the Royalist Captain Benet stationed his men here whilst defending against Fairfax, and in 1719 an angry mob threatened to burn it down as they thought it was harbouring Whig-favouring clergymen.
