Toxteth Park Cemetery on Smithdown Road, opened in June 1856 when the growing population of Liverpool required more burial spaces than churchyards could offer. It was noted by Dr Duncan in 1849 that "in some places it was impossible to dig a new grave without disturbing previous bodies. In some the soil when opened up is composed of decomposing human remains in various stages rather than earth". Toxteth was the first of several public cemeteries on the outskirts of the town. Various building at the cemetery are Grade II listed buildings. The cemetery also contains Toxteth War Memorial.
