The grand ornamental way envisaged by Samuel Brooks in the 1860s only went a short distance from the Hale/Wilmslow Road because he died before the ambitious project could be fully realised. His son - William Cunliffe Brooks - continued with some sections at the Brooklands end but the result was piecemeal, and nothing happened between Hale Road and Warburton Green except that a public footpath remained there. (When Brooks died in 1864 he left £3M - in cash alone - probably worth 20 times that in today's money.)
