This is George street viewed from the road bridge between Central Way and The Graftons. The pedestrianisation took place in the 1970s and is largely unchanged, at this end. The section between Cross Street and W H Smith's has, however, seen major improvement in recent years. I suspect older residents regret the loss of the many distinctive shop fronts - seen in old photographs of George Street - replaced by bland modernism which made much of the vicinity indistinguishable from a hundred other shopping areas.
