Travelling west, after leaving Dale Street Lock, the Rochdale Canal follows a rather dark and dank tunnel below the modern buildings of Piccadilly. To improve it when the canal was reopened, the cavernous recesses to the side were walled off and a new walkway was installed which avoided the need to walk around the edge of the underground area. These changes and the installation of lights and CCTV cameras have made walking this section much more pleasant than it had been in the past (although the automatic exposure system of the camera makes it look brighter than it actually is!). The mural also helps to brighten up the area.
