I seem to recall that some of the properties in St Mary's Close were church-related sheltered accommodation. The polished black granite Millennium obelisk commemorates lives lost in armed conflicts since 1945. There is a solemn inscription: We name before God, These from our homes and parish, Who have laid down their lives In the cause of peace and freedom.
