This is the start of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal which was completed in 1799 as a feeder for the canal's Tring summit. It was made navigable to Wendover fairly rapidly afterwards. The bridge is Number 1 on the Wendover Arm, but carries the main canal's towpath over the arm.
