This building catered for some of the thousands of American servicemen who were stationed at the nearby Holy Loch submarine base in the 1960s and 70s. It was later used as a retail timber warehouse, known as "Greenock Central Sawmills" and more recently as "M & J Timber", a company which has since moved to Drumfrochar Road in the east end of the town Image Plans for an ASDA supermarket on this site, which is owned by Clydeport, fell through last year.
