The Pierhead Building was erected in 1896 as dock offices for the Bute Dock Company. It is a 2-storey Gothic building faced with red brick and terracotta. The embattled clock tower over the main entrance can be seen here. One source states that it was rumoured that The Pierhead was where the first million pound cheque was kept after being signed in the nearby Coal Exchange. Now a National Assembly for Wales building, open to the public, the Pierhead Building is venue for discussion and debate. It features displays and interactive exhibitions and can host events and conferences. Grade I listed (the highest category) in 1975.
