These fine early 18th-century houses were once occupied by Huguenot silk merchants. This picture, taken on an October afternoon when the street was in shadow (see Image]), shows why the workshops were in high attic rooms with more window than wall. (Third-floor frame-knitters' workshops in Nottingham and other East Midlands towns, and tall Victorian lace factories with clerestories for their attic finishing shops, followed the same principle - though those were rarely such elegant buildings as the houses of Fournier Street.)
