Stretching from Haven Side to New Road, Far Bank (a corruption of Fore), this present-day open space was originally either a harbour, being a northerly extension of the Haven, or a defensive town ditch. An archaeological survey undertaken in 1975-76 (published by Hayfield & Slater, 1984) proved inconclusive.
