Carved panel over the central archway showing King David I (c.1124-1153) with, above, 'David I' and the scrolled motto 'Deo rectore' (God my guide) and, below, the words 'Rex Scotorum' (King of Scots). It replaced the original tablet from 1589, showing a coat of arms, after it had become almost obliterated over time.
