The information plaque on the carved pole explains that it was designed with people from Wester Hailes to represent their community. Several QR codes are shown around the pole. Scanning these with a smart phone will provide links to websites showing the social history of Wester Hailes and how the pole was made. Located beside the Union Canal, the pole was unveiled in December 2012 by the Rt Hon Donald Wilson, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh.
