The Symington, Biggar and Broughton railway was extended to Peebles in 1860; this part of the line was finally closed in 1954. The trackbed is currently informally used as a footpath; there are plans to upgrade it for use as a cycle path. Here it emerges into a housing estate on the south side of the river at Peebles.
