The castle was built by Norman bishops of Hereford, as Marcher Lords responsible for the defence of the borderlands between England and Wales. By the end of the Civil War the castle was a ruin and this area is virtually all that remains. Buildings along Castle Street and Church Street are thought to be on the site of the outer boundary of the castle. Narrow streets are one of the features of the town which was established by the first half of the 12th century. This view is taken from the castle boundary, looking southwards down Castle Street.
