Car in the background is of a type particularly popular of the affluent inhabitants of this area; see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOu9YbMw2qk (see the last 5 seconds of the video). According to a plaque attached the well was founded in 1886 by two supporters of the temperance movement (the Misses Spotteswood) in 1886 to provide alternative non-alcoholic drinks to travellers. The well stopped working in 1970 when Thames Water dug some boreholes and lowered the level of the water table.
