The plaque on the cottage in the centre reads: KING CHARLES II. SLEPT HERE SEPTEMBER 23-24, 1651. ERECTED APRIL 4. 1802. This cottage is on the route of Charles II's flight from his defeat at the battle of Worcester, and legend has it he slept here during his escape to France.
