The Royal Oak Hotel 38 High Street

Grade II Listed inn with the painted inscription 'This pine end was wholly built on the property and at the expense of T H Jones in the year 1842'. The stucco front is about 1905. The original Royal Oak opened before 1800 and consisted the part of the building right of the archway. The left section was the 'Globe' opened before 1785 and subsequently taken over by the Royal Oak in 1861-2. Innkeepers are listed as; 1830-Margaret Edwards, 1841-Rees Davies, 1871-John Jones followed by his wife in 1891 and a Miss Jones in July 1894, 1901-David Price Davies also Councillor and veterinary surgeon succeeded by his wife in 1911. In 1902 the death of the owner of the Royal Oak Thomas Hugh Rice Hughes was reported. He died in the hotel in Davies' arms. The August 2016 Google Street View shows it with a sale board. The hotel's Facebook page says 'The Restaurant and Hotel will re open in 2017' presumably having been closed for some time prior to this. In 2018 it was under new management and being renovated as The Royal Oak Hotel with 7 rooms that included a pub and restaurant called The Stables.
