The Lancashire Fusiliers suffered heavy losses in the Gallipoli campaign; there were more than 500 Lancashire casualties, including men from Bury, on the first day alone and the regiment famously won "six Victoria Crosses before breakfast”. When the Fusilier Museum was moved to its current location in the Grade II listed former Arts & Crafts Centre in 2009, the former Sparrow Park which is adjacent to the museum, was renamed Gallipoli Gardens as a memorial garden for those Fusiliers who lost their lives during the First World War (http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/park-named-for-gallipoli-heroes-917256 Manchester Evening News). The 1922 war memorial (Image]) was also moved to the garden; it can be seen towards the left hand side of this photograph, behind the tree.
