Class 06, 06008, stands idle in the sidings at Markinch station. A fleet of 35 of these locomotives was built by Andrew Barclay at Kilmarnock in 1958. Many of the type were withdrawn at the end of the 1960's and in the early 1970's with only 10 left by 1975. By the time this photo was taken only 4 remained in service. 06008 was finally withdrawn in October 1980 and scrapped in August 1983. The shunter kept at Markinch was there to run trips up the Auchmuty Branch to the paper mill. The branch closed in 1992 and the starch for the paper mill is now delivered in large wagons to Thornton Yard for final delivery by road.
