The Railfreight Depot opened in 1956, in anticipation of increased coal traffic from nearby Rothes Colliery, simultaneously replacing the cramped sidings of Thornton Junction. Sadly there were geological problems at the colliery and the new coal failed to materialise. A line-up of class 20 locomotives with 20205 to the fore stands in the depot between duties. They were extensively used in pairs on the many coal trains from other collieries in the area. Since this image was taken most class 20's have been withdrawn and the depot now has a two track shed covering the fuelling area in this photo (nearest track and track out of shot on the right).
