Taken when the short stretch of the Rochdale Canal through the city centre, from the Ashton canal to the Bridgewater, was the only remaining navigable stretch, and before this area was opened out and tidied up. In the distance, the tower of the Refuge Assurance building (now, 2013, a hotel).
