This frieze, 1889 by James Pittendrigh Macgillivray, depicts Scottish surgeon Peter Lowe (d. 1610). Lowe was the founder of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and appears here to be timing a pulse rate (note the sand glass on the table).
