Castle Cairn, New Cumnock

This cairn records environmental improvements that were made to services in the Castle area of the village. They were partly funded by European money from the RECHAR programme, which aimed to revitalise depressed mining areas. New Cumnock would have qualified for this funding quite easily. The area's fortunes have fluctuated with the state of the coal mining industry. Formerly a big local employer, the pits closed during the 1960s and 1970s. They were replaced recently by the open cast mines that are now idle due to the collapse of Scottish Coal.
