Pevsner says this was "Camberwell's showpiece [estate] of 1955-59 (Borough Architect F.O. Hayes)". A mixture of big slabs such as this (Marie Curie House) and lower blocks such as Image A fire in its sister slab, Lakanal House, in 2009 resulted in the death of six people, at least partly attributable to the design which included only one staircase.
