Base of the No.1 blast furnace (completed December 1849) of the Llynfi Ironworks. Original height forty-five feet. Scheduled Ancient Monument, consolidated c1995. Curiously, this furnace was the fourth and last to be built on the site yet was numbered 'one'. It was originally intended to build a set piece of four furnaces in 1839 and No3 and No4 were quickly built. Then, due to a slump in the iron trade, building work stopped on the furnaces in 1840 and No2 (1845) and No1 (1849) were added later as trade improved.
