Monks' Abbey nave (nearest) and chancel - This was never an abbey, but a priory, an outpost of St Mary’s Abbey in York. Manned by a prior and another monk, the priory was there to overlook the monastic property and the monks collected tithes of the crops raised on it. It had a watermill and fish ponds.
