Sewer vent stack by the Water of Leith

What looks like a former industrial chimney stands alone in the woodland near the river, is actually a particularly large example of a sewer vent stack or "stench pipe". The interceptor sewer took Edinburgh's untreated sewage out to the Firth of Forth until the city sewage works was built in the 1970s.
