The widening of the road has led to the replacement of the old Pont Ladi-wen by a culvert. The narrow old bridge, Pont Ladi-wen (white-lady bridge), had a very bad reputation. For centuries, it was noctural walkers and riders who encountered the lady. She was particularly feared by horses. Then, after the advent of the motor car, many a motorist were frightened out of their wits by this female spectre that suddenly dashed out in front of their car. Convinced that they had run someone down, motorists would jump out of their cars to find nothing. The lady had disappeared. The same lady, or others of her ilk, haunt a number of bridges in Snowdonia. Hauntings by spectre dogs are also common. WWII Home Guard logs record a number of incidents of shooting at such apparitions.
