Now hidden by vegetation, the end of the Kendal Fault is here. William the Conqueror's lads chose the spot a little beyond as the place to build their bailey, which, about seven hundred years later, the citizens of Kendal chose as the place to erect a monument to celebrate the restoration of the monarchy - which had occurred a hundred years earlier (things moved fast in Kendal).
