This street is named after Sir Benjamin Hammet; he was a Taunton M.P. and was instrumental in the creation of the street and the adjoining church square in 1788. Most of the original Georgian buildings are still in use, although as offices and the like. Naturally, the shops and traffic bollard nearest the camera are recent additions.
