B1054 passes The Bluebell Inn

This inn was formerly called the Rose and Crown Inn and is associated with the notorious 18th C. highwayman; Dick Turpin. He was born in the village whilst his father was proprietor of the inn. The building contains copies of the parish register recording Dick Turpin's baptism. Additionally; a letter addressed to the Rose and Crown, whilst he was arraigned in York under an assumed name, led to his identification, conviction and execution in 1739. The 17th C. inn was considerably altered in the subsequent century and is now Grade II listed with English Heritage Building ID: 405654
