Rayleigh windmill was built in 1809 in the outer bailey of Rayleigh Castle. The sails were removed in 1906 to be replaced with steam power then diesel and finally electricity. The static sails were fitted in 1974. There is now a museum on the ground floor http://www.museumsinessex.org/rayleigh.html
