An information board records that the garden occupies a site within the area of Roman settlement and the medieval town walls. In the 18th century it was part of the gardens of the Edmondes family of Old Hall. In the 20th century it became the kitchen garden of Cowbridge Grammar School and a tree nursery for the local authority. Transformation into a physic garden by the Cowbridge Physic Garden Trust began in January 2005. A physic garden contains plants with medicinal properties. Medicinal plants have a long history and are still important in the development of modern pharmaceuticals. Many plants also have culinary, cosmetic and dyeing values. In design and content, this is an 18th century physic garden - only plants found in Britain before 1800 are included.
