Built at a cost of £2520 on Hangman's Hill and opened on 12th November 1839. Sir Christopher Seton was hanged on the site in 1306 for supporting his brother-in-law Robert the Bruce. Sir Christopher's widow, Christiana, erected a small chapel in his memory dedicated to St Mary.
