This is the A2 main road from Kilkeel to Rostrevor, at Glenloughan, just after where a minor road strikes off north for the Mournes. The view is to the west. YHANI (the Youth Hostel Association of Northern Ireland) had a very short-lived hostel here immediately after the war; it lasted from May 1945 to May 1946 only. Just as it was finding its feet, the YHANI Council had to report that vacant possession was required of the premises, as the schoolmaster had returned from the forces. The Association lost of many of its early post-war hostels in similar fashion. The whereabouts of the premises remain uncertain; a sketch-map indicates that it was somewhere at or near this cluster of buildings. Please contact if you are able to shed any light on this youth hostel, or any others of this era.
