A planning application to the Local Board of Health to build a house at No.8 Hutt Street was submitted in 1862 by John Seaman, superintendent of the Zoological Gardens, a taxidermist, and landlord of the Polar Bear public house, Spring Bank. Various theories have been offered for this curious mock half-timbered house but, to date, no evidence has been forthcoming to support any of them.
