This building has an interesting history. It was built in 1943 as a canteen for military personnel working on the Cairnryan railway and the formation of the port of Cairnryan. It was gifted by McVitie and Price, the biscuit manufacturers, and opened by the Duchess of Gloucester. The building is constructed of brick and concrete and built on raised foundations. It had its own railway station which was directly opposite, on the west side of the A77. This station was a wooden construction with a shelter. It was later used as a primary school for Cairnryan.
