In the early 16th century, from which this cross dates, the Causeway area was the centre of the then village of March: a market was held here and this was the Market Cross. This site (at the junction of Causeway Close and the B1101) is now some distance south of the centre of the current town of March and the cross is known as 'The Old Stone Cross'.
