Perhaps the view is even better for members of the Magdalen College Choir who assemble to sing the Hymnus Eucharisticus from the top of Magdalen Tower at dawn each May Day? The Botanic Garden is seen here from the south. The University's Botanic Garden is the oldest botanic garden in Great Britain and one of the oldest scientific gardens in the world. It was founded in 1621 as a physic garden growing plants for medicinal research. It currently thought to contain over 8,000 different plant species on a 4½ acre (1.8 hectares) site. Merton Field and Christ Church Meadow lie behind it with the River Cherwell wending its way north to south around the garden's eastern edge.
