This otherwise overlooked wall near the cathedral has a history of its own. Behind it was the Herb Garden of William Turner (c.1508-68). It was his love and understanding of natural plants that led to him writing 'A New Herball' (1551-68), and he became recognised as the Father of English Botany. Turner was also Dean of Wells 1551-4 and 1560-68.
