The sorry remains of part of the Selby super pit. Coal was first turned in 1983 from the complex and it was all closed in 2004 after 21 years of a projected 40 year life and the mining of 121 million tons of a projected 400 million tons. There is still a lot down there but the inability to turn a profit in the privatised era led to its demise.
