Bolton's Bench car park was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in April 1979, according to the sign. The New Forest was established in 1079 by William the Conqueror, so 1979 represented the 900th anniversary - hence Her Majesty's visit. It is a popular "free" (voluntary contribution only) car park on the edge of the lawn east of Lyndhurst, and within very easy walking distance of the town centre.
