Carved female figures known as 'Wooden Dolls' have been a feature of North Shields for over 200 years. The first was created from the figurehead of a shipwrecked vessel in 1781 Image A public house was known in this location from 1794, originally called the King's Head. It was reputed to have a secret tunnel allowing local seamen to escape the press-gangs in the C18th.
