In 1899 the Bourne Nursing Association was formed, and when Mr Butterfield left his house for use as a cottage hospital in 1910, they provided the basis of operation. By 1913 there were two wards of 4 beds, and the hospital was considerably expanded at the rear after the first world war and became the town's war memorial hospital. Many Bourne people were born here in the maternity unit. The hospital closed in 1983 but the War memorial status, and the natural stubbornness of Bourne people, prevented its sale for housing and it is now home to a day care centre, a pregnancy advice charity, and the parking for the St John's ambulance.
